Obsidian is really useful
I’ve been trying out various note taking solutions the paste few months. I first tried Dendron and while I liked having notes directly in VS code it was a bit too much setup for me to get it really working the way I wanted. Next came Foam. It was less setup but it also felt like it had less feature.
Both Dendron and Foam focused on extending VS Code, working with simple markdown and keeping you in control over your content.
While I like markdown and want to keep control over my content I’ve been using VS Code less and less. What’s more, neither solution provided me with a way to take notes on my phone.
Over time a few requirements have become clear
- Remain in control over my content
- Markdown for formatting, but preferably a simple way to view styled notes
- A simple way to keep track of todos inlined in notes
- Front Matter support for tags and other meta data
It turns out Obsidian more than covers all those requirements. So that’s now my new note taking app.
